Protopic medicine is used to treat severe atopic dermatitis (eczema).
It is a topical macrolide immunosuppressant works by reducing cell activity in the body’s immune system which helps in slowing down the growth of atopic dermatitis on your skin.

Do not use Protopic if you are allergic to it.
Inform your doctor beforehand, if you have any kind of skin cancer or infection, any genetic disorder, weak immune system, kidney disease, swelling, redness, irritation.
Generic tacrolimus can lower the blood cells that help your body fight infections, making it for you to catch infections.
It is advised to avoid, sunlight, sun lamps, tanning beds and phototherapy treatment with UVA and UVB light. If you are outdoors, wear loose clothing over the treated skin. Do not use sunscreen on the treated skin unless your doctor advises you to do so.
Inform your doctor, if your skin condition does not improve after using Protopic for over 6 weeks.
This medicine is not for children younger that 2 years old. Protopic has caused cancer or lymphoma.
Severe stinging, burning, itching, or soreness where the medicine is applied;
swollen glands;
redness or crusting around your hair follicles; or
signs of a skin infection (redness, swelling, itching, oozing).
Less serious Protopic side effects may include:
mild burning, stinging, or itching;
skin redness;
acne;
cold or flu symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat;
headache; or
feeling more sensitive to hot or cold temperatures
If you are using Protopic on a child younger than 16 years old, use only 0.03% ointment. 0.1% ointment is used in adults and children who are at least 16 years old but is too strong to use on younger children.
Wash your hands before applying this ointment. Apply a thin layer only to the skin affected by eczema. Do not cover the treated skin with a bandage.
Do not bathe, shower, or swim right after applying Protopic as water can wash away the ointment.
This medicine is not for long-term use. Stop using it as soon as your skin gets cleared.
Store tacrolimus at room temperature. Keep the ointment tube tightly closed when not in use.
